BCU 2 Star Award: The 2 Star Award is designed to promote a broad foundation in paddlesports and adaptable skills so that the paddler can progress easily to more challenging conditions and to different kinds of paddle craft. Training is based on the philosophy that a wide range of experiences early in skill development, produce effective and adaptable paddlers.
2 Star Assessment: The paddler is asked to demonstrate basic boat control on calm, sheltered water in both a kayak and a canoe. The kayak can be of any type. The paddler is expected to perfom simple maneouvers efficiently and accurately. The award is illustrated by three documents: the Syllabus, the Training Notes, and the Assessment Notes.
We firmly believe that the important thing is developing good skills and having fun and that assessments are a secondary goal that can provide challenge, motivation, and a sense of accomplishment. Preparing for 2 Star Assessment involves taking courses like Sea Kayaking 1 and 2, plus Canoe Skills, and of course, practicing what you learn. You should also keep a simple log of you paddlesports experiences (you can make one on your own, or pick one up from us!). By the time you take the 2 Star Assessment, you should have paddled several different types of kayaks and canoes, and gone on several short (2-6 mile/ 1-3 hour) journeys in a couple of different locations. If you paddle a couple of times each week, you could reach this level in a month. If you paddle less often, plan on 3-8 months. 2 Star Syllabus 2 Star Training Notes 2 Star Assessment Notes
