Enjoy the exciting sport of river kayaking on our 2 day courses on the Kern River!
This weekend class introduces moving water kayak skills. We'll learn the basic maneuvers necessary to kayak on moving water, including ferries, eddy turns, and peel outs. Other topics include whitewater safety, edging, and "reading" the river. 12 hours of instruction over 2 days on class I to II+ whitewater. For those who don't know how to Eskimo roll, we use fun and friendly sit-on-top kayaks. Those who can roll (and we urge you to learn!) may use decked whitewater kayaks.
Not just for adrenaline junkies! This is great cross-training for sea kayakers interested in paddling in areas where tidal currents play a significant role!
Prerequisites: Sea Kayaking 2 or equivalent. Some kayak surf practice is STRONGLY recommended. A solid Eskimo roll is desirable.
We meet at the Kern County Campground situated on the Kern River just outside Bakersfield. Most people arrive Friday evening, but class officially begins on Saturday morning. Meals are provided from Sat. breakfast to Sun. lunch. Camp fees are not included in the price of the class and run $10-20/person for the weekend depending on how many cars and campsites we have.
Sat.: Dry land discussion of river hydrology and whitewater safety. Introduction to foundation skills (ferries, eddy turns, peel outs) on class I water. Application of skills on class II water.
Sun.: Continued improvement of foundation skills. Reading whitewater. We finish about 3pm.
