This course provides hands-on instruction in practical navigation from a kayak. We will teach you how to read a nautical chart, use hand-held and deck compasses, calculate tides, distances, and speed. You will practice locating your position on a chart, then keeping track of your position through piloting (visual references) as well as dead reckoning (using speed and direction). Your Aqua Adventures instructor will also teach you to use ranges to check progress or drift, and ferry angles to compensate for cross current or wind. "Basic Navigation" is a component of BCU 4 Star award.
